Teeth: A Nasty-Funny Night

Okay, so I think I've just came back from one of the most "interesting" movies that I will ever see in my life. Remember, "interesting" has many meanings.

I went with Beckster to go watch Teeth, an indie flick directed by Mitchell Lichtenstein which comes out in selected theaters tomorrow. (That's about as in depth-movie-analyzing-ish I will attempt to get). If I could categorize this movie into one category, I would say it falls perfectly into the Nasty-Funny-Feminist-AntiMen-Gross category. IMDB lists it under horror and dark comedy, but I think my category is a bit better in explaining what this movie is exactly about.

But let's go back a bit. During my BB meeting on Monday, this movie was listed as an event that we could receive credit for. I put it down on my list to sign up for it however I quickly scribbled it out when the board told us that it was a horror movie. Great. I hate being scared. Then, an interesting statement was said: "It's about a girl who has teeth where a girl should NOT have teeth". Okay, I thought. Now being the slow thinker that I am, I was thinking, WTF?! In her armpits?! Teeth in her hair!?? Now that is pretty gross and scary. However, after five minutes, it clicked. Oh Shoot. Oh shoot. You mean down there.....

So yes my friends, I just watched a movie about a girl who has teeth down there. Now if you don't catch what I mean by "down there" let me just clarify by saying that I am not referring to her feet. I watched the trailer and the editors did build it up to fall under the horror genre with eerie clips and screams and blackness all mixed in. But the more I thought about it, the more I wanted to watch it. I read the reviews and many people said that the movie was funny, so "hmmm" I thought. Afterall, there is a very "positive" message out there that it sends out for people and it is quite a pro-women movie because seriously, you can't help but feel that the scummy men got what they deserved. The movie is based on the myth of the vagina dentata, I won't go too much into it, but you can always google it up.

The movie is rated R, but that's only because of the graphic images of bitten off you-know-what, some nudity, and because of well, the subject matter at hand. The lead actress was really delightful and made you instantly gravitate towards her side even if she is the one with vicious teeth. It was really a dark comedy and the whole audience laughed nearly every five minutes so anti-horror people, do not be afraid, it's really not that bad. There is gore, but it's just so wrong that it's right and that it's funny. You can't help but laugh.

I would like to point out, that this is probably not the best movie to take your date to.

I'm Sleepy

It's almost 2 in the morning and my eyes feel like they're burning because I've just finished watching The Science of Sleep. I absolutely loved this movie. It's wonderful. It's really weird but I think that's why I liked it. I like to get confused. It makes life a bit more interesting.

I should sleep. I need to rewire my sleep cycle by next week because school starts.

Oh and I think Charlotte Gainsbourg has the sweetest sounding voice ever.

I say goodbye to you as I drift off into a land of unicorns and octupus tentacles.

Goodnight.

Lust Clothing

I took a break this weekend from studying to watch a movie. Scratch that.

I delayed my studying this weekend to watch a movie, Ang Lee's new controversial film, Lust Caution. I must say that I thought it was a very beautiful film, a little slow and lacking much action, but overall the cinematography and the score made it very beautiful - typical Ang Lee. It's a little predictable, but I still liked it. Although I didn't understand why and how the lead heroine exactly fell in love with her target enemy. Either she really enjoyed the violent sex or she saw something beneath his inhumane sadistic character.

Usually, I am what people call "white washed" or at least thats what I am in comparision to some of my very asianized friends, but hey, its all good. However, watching this movie has resparked my interest in Chinese culture and history. I'm so proud and happy that Asians are successfully gradually entering the entertainment industry and reaching a wider audience world wide. We still want to see more asian characters represented on tv though! I wish they made an Ugly Betty with an Asian flavor, now that would be so cool.

There were many firsts for me from watching this film. It was the first NC-17 rated film I've ever seen. I don't think the edited version of Showgirls played on VH1 counts. It was the first Chinese film I watched in theatres AND I am proud to say that I could understand. Most of it, I did cheat a little to look at the subtitles. It was the first time I watched explicit sex scenes without closing my eyes. I took it like a man and was mature about the situation. Man, were the actors mighty flexible. And finally, after watching the movie, I've fallen in LOVE with the 1940's style blend of eastern and western influence. I literally drooled at the goregeousness over the women's delicious hats, trench coats, red lips, t-strap heels and body hugging qi-paos. There is something so classic, so timeless, so elegant without being overtly sexy, and most of all mysterious.

I managed to find some pictures from the movie online, but trust me the film had even more oodles of goodness that these pictures can not even begin to express.

I regret not getting one of those qi paos I saw when I went to China. At the time I thought they were completely tacky and costume-y, but I want it now!

I don't quite know what's come over me. Although I do love to look at and take inspiration from different decades, this 40's refined glamour look has never really been me. Maybe I am growing up.

Nahhhhh.

Like it up baby, Lick. It. Up.

Last night I got to experience the fantastic 1989 movie that is Heathers. Don't let that cutesy-romantic poster fool you for it is a pretty dark comedy with popular people getting murdered and all which is probably a loser's dream come true - that is of course if the said loser is a crazy psychopath. Not that there's anything wrong with being a crazy psychopath. To each their own.

So anyways, while I was watching the movie it got me thinking about highschool and cliques. I now appreciate the fact that I'm in college now and not in highschool. Highschool food was just plain gross.

Yet, I also wish that I had experienced the stereotypical clique system back in highschool more thoroughly because then this is what my life would be like:

Prologue: Lala is the school's #1 loser. She has no friends, except for her eraser. She has been the schools #1 loser for all her school life.

Scene 1: Enter Lala, the school's #1 loser. Enter mean popular people (MPP for short).

MMP: You're lobster headband and cape are soooooo lame. Gosh, what a loser. MMP walk away.

Lala: Sadness. Runs home crying.

Scene 2: Lala goes to college. Does well. Becomes successful. Then writes a movie about highschool that earns rave reviews, 200 billion dollars, and 10 oscars.

Scene 3: Highschool reunion. MMP have turned into mean ugly-washed out- wrinkly-unsuccessful popular peopl (MUWOWUPP for short). Lala enters with Edward Norton as her date. MUWOWUPP stare at her in green envy.

Lala: SUCKAS! Laughs away evily...I mean, happily....no, evily sounds better.

Yes, this is, scratch that, was, a dream of mine that unfortunately will never come true because I was traveling through highschool in my own lalaworld that I failed to make Scene 1 and the Prologue come true. But for now, I guess I will just keep it in my mind and maybe someday live vicariously through my child's own highschool ordeals.

Another thing I realized is how icky 80's fashion was. Look at those shoulder pads baby. Look at them. It makes me want to take a needle and deflate those shoulders on steroids.

Countdown till move in day is five days. That shall be five days of non-stop DIYing, shopping, sleeping, interneting, and oldpeople obsessing.

good morning baltimore!

Ah. the sun. the air. life.
Today is Friday and naturally my sister and I had another round of Friday fun. It was actually a spur of the moment idea because I didn't want to rot at home or melt at home since it was pretty hot today. Come to think of it, I have a lot of things to do on my list of things to do but they never get done. Does that make any sense? We were planning on painting pottery but I soon realized that painting pottery is not as cheap as it should be. So what to do? HAIRSPRAY!!

GOOOD MORNINGGGGGGGGG BALTIMOOOOORREEEEEEE!!!
This song is stuck in my head. My sister keeps telling me I'm singing it wrong, but I'm singing it right in my heart.

I really liked the movie, I wanted to sing right and dance so badly right after put then people would have looked at me strangely and I think I've gotten enough strange looks in one lifetime already. Fashionwise, the clothing were really cute. I want to go shopping for some vintage dresses now. I'm looking for a floral dress with big poofy skirt please. We giggled during the cheesy scenes and laughed at John Travolta as a woman and we were relieved that there were no kissing scenes between John Travolta and Christopher Walken. I want big hair now. I want to be sent to detention where people can just dance and not copy from the dictionary.

We later hopped off to Thai food! Yum! We explored the deep and dangerous jungles of the suburbs and found Thai Delight. Delightful indeed. Ordered curry and this noodle dish.

In the late afternoon we went to pick up my sister glasses and went to eat at Pat & Oscars. When we went to find parking my dad was signaling to turn into a parking spot where this lady was leaving but then all of the sudden this young girl driver turned in. My dad honked but the girl didnt even say sorry or leave. I felt like doing a Nawanda on her (Fried Green Tomato reference) but then this guy did it for me. He walked up to the girl and said "Don't you know people were waiting for that spot? B*TCH!?" Oh wow. Isn't america a lovely place full of aggressive people to do your dirty cursing for you without even having to get out of the car yourself. When we later circled the parking lot we saw that the girl didn't get out of the car. She was probably afraid we were going to jump her or something. Now I kind of feel bad.

Nah.

When we drove home I saw a street named Fashion street. Not very fashion-y at all. Jeesh what a trickster.

We watched some TLC's A Model Life. The girls are million times prettier than the America's next top model wannabes. Maybe it's those enticing accents of the foreign girls ... yeah its got to be that, accents give you an X factor in my book.

Friday Fun

Today, I drove my sister and I to the movies. It was the first time I ever drove anybody other than myself or my imaginary friend Shaniqua.
Me walking towards the theatre acting like a fobby tourist.
We went to watch Ratatouille! And I must say I liked it a lot. Only Disney Pixar could ever make me want a rat as much as I do now or better yet a rat that cooks gourmet food. The art was really really really good. Some parts looked so realistic that you had to take a second glance or a third glance to realize that it's actually animated.

My favorite character was Remy's brother Emile. Why you ask? Just look at that round tummy. I have a weird obsession with fat things and Emile was no exception. He's just so round and cute! I wanted to pet him and his tummy the whole time watching. Sigh. I know, I'm a little coo-koo. But it got worst later on in the day. The family and I went out to eat at this chinese restaurant and then I spotted this fat guy sitting across from us and I couldn't help staring (i know, it's really impolite). But he looked so cute like he could be a pixar character and he had a round tummy that I wanted to touch! I told my friend and then realized how perverted I sounded. No wonder I get styes all the time (she told me it was a chinese thing that perverted people get styes).
Then after, we walked across to eat at Fish Grill. Yummm...fish. I was actually craving french food but sadly there was nothing french around.

Tomorrow is my thrift-venture so peace out folks!
